Significant June Rain Event Ahead

FastCast—Saturday, June 4 to Monday, June 6:
After a couple muggy days with many showers (and thunderstorms), a significant June rain event is ahead. From Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning, steady rain will fall across the Pacific Northwest, turning to showers on Sunday afternoon. The amount of rain that is expected is significant for June. Expect the Lowlands to receive 0.7-1.5 inches, with less in the rain shadow around Everett. The coast will receive 1-3 inches, the mountains will get 2-5 inches, and Eastern WA will get 0.25-1.2 inches. All of this rain is a major portion of June’s average rainfall, and it will continue the trend of above average precipitation that has persisted all spring. Temperatures will be on the chilly side this weekend, with highs in the low to mid 60s, and lows in the 50s. Dry weather will prevail on Monday, with highs in the low to mid 60s and lows in the upper 40s to low 50s.

A significant June rain event is ahead for Washington State. Most rain will fall from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning, with showers possible on Sunday afternoon. The NAM high-resolution model below shows the expected rainfall for the event.

Expect 0.7-1.5 inches of rain in the lowlands, with less (0.25-0.5”) in the rain shadow around Everett. The coast will get 1-3 inches, and the mountains will be soaked with up to 5+ inches in some spots! Eastern Washington will receive 0.2-1.1 inches, more needed drought relief. The most rain will fall in Oregon, where up to 2 inches are possible around Portland, and 2-6 inches are expected in the Coast Range.

Some forecasts, such as the European model, are calling for even more rain, as seen below.

The European gives the Lowlands 0.6-2 inches, and even brings up to 1.6 inches of rain in Eastern Washington. While likely an outlier, this prediction is still possible.

The amount of rain that could fall in the Lowlands this weekend may be enough to bring June to near or above our “normal” amounts…less than a week into the month! The graphic below from NWS Seattle shows Sea-Tac Airport’s 2022 observed rainfall (dark green) and the average rainfall (light green).

Precipitation levels off drastically in June, July, and August. We are already noticeably above average, and this weekend will only add to that. June’s average rainfall is around 1.45 inches at Sea-Tac Airport, and amounts very near that are possible this weekend.

It appears that June is following in May’s footsteps, with quite a rainy start. Stay tuned, as a couple days near 70 degrees are possible next week!
