Typical Fall Weather, Then A Change to Active Weather

We have enjoyed a week of typical fall weather, with foggy mornings and sunny afternoons. If you've noticed, it is getting cooler, and it feels like "fall is in the air." Our transition to fall will continue, with a shift to a more active weather pattern by this weekend.

First of all...what to expect Wednesday through Friday...

Fog, dense in some places, will be present on Wednesday morning through midday. Expect highs of 65-70 degrees with lower temperatures if fog/low clouds persist later.

Thursday and Friday will be mostly cloudy with a low chance of showers. Expect highs 63-67 degrees with lows 48-54 degrees. The precipitation chance increases Friday night.

Now for the pattern shift...a weather system will move in Friday night, bringing rain and wind. Here is a graphic from NWS Seattle describing the situation.

Rain will be the biggest impact with the Friday-Saturday storm. Below is the forecast rain totals from Tuesday through Saturday afternoon.

The South Sound area receives 0.64-1.28 inches of rain. More on the coast and in the mountains.

Let's forecast out to one week from today (10/6-10/13). Here is the UW model forecast.

Wow!! The Puget Sound area gets a soaking! This forecast shows 1.28-5.12 inches of rain for the lowlands, consistent with other forecasts. It will sure feel like fall now!

One more weather impact from these upcoming systems...wind. The wind details will likely change over the next couple days.

Let's take a look at the European (ECMWF) Model forecast for Puyallup, from Saturday to Monday. (To read the forecast from top to bottom: date, time, sky condition, temperature, rain, sustained wind, wind gusts, wind direction).

We are working with 2 storm systems here. Let's break it down.

The Friday-Saturday system brings at least a half inch of rain and winds gusting 25-40 mph.

There's a break on Sunday, with drier conditions and breezy conditions (winds gusting 25-30 mph).

The potentially strongest storm, a low pressure center making landfall on Vancouver Island, brings winds gusting 40-50 mph all day Monday. This storm doesn't have as much rain, but looks to have gustier winds. Since it is still early in the season, a storm of this strength will cause tree damage and power outages. Stay tuned!
