Dry Start To September, Heat Wave Likely

It's September! I can't believe we've gotten through 8 months of 2020 already! September 1st is the start of "Meteorological Fall" which is based on the annual temperature cycle.

However...it sure won't feel like fall to start the month. In fact, there is an increasing chance of hot temperatures in the first 2 weeks of September.

Below is the Puyallup forecast from weather.com

Wow!! 7 days above 85 degrees! That is abnormal for September. For example, from September 1-15, 2019, the highest temperature was only 81 degrees. In comparison, the first 15 days of September 2020 have only 5 days below 81 degrees. That's crazy!!

The heat will come in one long wave, with temperatures 84-92 degrees from Thursday (9/3) to the next Thursday (9/10). This will likely elevate fire danger and make it quite dry around the area.

Here's the forecast from the GFS model for Saturday (9/4).

Saturday's highs are 85-88 degrees around the South Sound. Sunday will be slightly warmer, with upper 80s being more common. This Friday will be in the low-mid 80s.

Monday is a break in the "very warm" temperatures, with highs in the low-mid 80s.

Then, on Tuesday, some of the hottest September temperatures since 2014 arrive in Western Washington. Here is the forecast for Tuesday (9/8).

Wow. Widespread highs of 90-95 degrees. This is only the first day of hot weather. Wednesday's (9/9) forecast is below.

Wednesday also has widespread highs in the 90s.  We need to be on the lookout for dangerous fire conditions with the possibility for rapid fire growth.

After Wednesday, temperatures slowly cool down, but temperatures near 90 degrees are still possible on Thursday (9/10).

As of now, a significant dry stretch is likely, with a decent chance of no rain through September 17th. After the 17th, a gradual change to more "fall-like" weather is likely.

Because temperatures of 90 degrees or higher are in the forecast, I expect that heat alerts and/or fire danger alerts will be issued soon. Stay tuned as always for the latest updates.
