Evacuations In Bonney Lake As Fires & Smoke Continue

Please pray for families, students, and staff impacted or evacuating from the Sumner Grade Fire in the Bonney Lake area. This is serious and scary for the people affected by it.

The Sumner Grade Fire has burned 150 acres around SR-410 in parts of Sumner and Bonney Lake. It has tripled in size since this afternoon. Hundreds of homes in Bonney Lake have been evacuated due to the fire's proximity to neighborhoods.

This picture was taken by @BonneyLakeWX in Bonney Lake at 7:00 PM Tuesday night before the area was upgraded to a "go now" Level 3 evacuation.

Areas south of SR-410 were put under a Level 2 "be ready" evacuation around 5:30 PM today. This was because winds began to shift from east to north around this time. Remember the wind is named for the direction it comes from. Since winds began coming from the north, they pushed the fire south towards large neighborhoods south of SR-410.

These winds have started to subside, but the fire is still threatening areas of Bonney Lake. While this fire has been burning, many other fires have burned areas of the South Sound. Fires were reported in parts of Tacoma, Covington, Federal Way, and Puyallup. The fire in Puyallup was at Skate Tiffany's, where there was damage.

Tuesday night's winds will hopefully continue to weaken, though occasional gusts of 15-30 mph are still possible.

Smoke from regional fires and those in Eastern Washington has moved in to Western Washington again. The air quality is unhealthy and will remain that way tomorrow (Wednesday).

Temperatures Wednesday and Thursday will soar into the low-mid 90s across our area. Winds won't be as strong, but it will still be incredibly dry across the region, fueling fires. Remember, it takes only a tiny spark to start a fire.
