Heavy Rain, Mountain Snow Impacting Western Washington

Heavy rain, totaling 0.75-2 inches, has fallen across Western Washington on Saturday.

This rain has prompted an Urban & Small Stream Flood Advisory until 11:45 PM Saturday. The alert is below.

Flooding is possible on streets, in streams, in low-lying areas, and in areas with poor drainage. Additionally, rises are occurring on area rivers.

How much rain has fallen?

In the 6-hour period of 4:30-10:30 PM Saturday, over a half inch fell across most of the South Sound!

The 24 hour totals (10:30 PM Friday-10:30 PM Saturday) are below. (Rain is still falling as I write this Saturday night).

Wow! Widespread amounts of 0.5-2 inches!

But wait, there’s more...

Heavy snow and downright messy travel conditions prompted the closure of I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass. Conditions had been bad all day, with gridlock in this 5:30 PM snapshot from a WSDOT camera.

About 2 hours later, the pass was closed both directions. As of 10:35 PM, I-90 is closed from North Bend to Ellensburg, nearly 75 miles, with no estimated reopening.

Mountain snow and lowland rain will continue through early Sunday morning, with 0.1-0.5 inches of lowland rain and 5-10 inches of mountain snow.

More weather systems will impact the area through the middle of the week, with another 0.5-2 inches of rain likely through Wednesday night.

This large amount of rain will bring an increased threat of landslides to Western Washington, outlined by this graphic from NWS Seattle.

Be safe, stay dry, and stay tuned!
