Friday Night Update: Mountain Snow, River Flooding, and Gusty Winds Continue

No FastCast tonight…keep reading below for an update on the upcoming weather and continuation of the storm.

Winds are surging down the Strait and Admiralty Inlet, heading for North King County and South Snohomish County. Expect winds gusting 50-60 mph for these areas through 2 AM Saturday. For the rest of the area, southerly winds will gust 40-50 mph (strongest near the water) through early Saturday morning. Gusts of 50-70 mph are also expected in Eastern Washington through early Saturday morning. The HRRR forecast for 10 PM Friday is below.

Across the area, be prepared for tree damage and power outages through the night. Winds will remain breezy on Saturday, except in Convergence Zone bands of precipitation. Expect gusts of 25-35 mph.

Significant rain has fallen around the area, and there is also a significant rain shadow, that left Seattle nearly dry, while the Cascades picked up 8+ inches, as seen in the 24 hour rainfall totals below.

The precipitation contrasts across the area were incredible!

As expected, this rain is producing flooding. Rivers are rising around the area, and the NWS Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service forecast below shows the river flooding forecast.

Most rivers draining from the Cascades will flood, with moderate flood stage on the Snoqualmie, Snohomish, Skokomish, Nisqually, and Cowlitz Rivers.

The final significant impact of this system will be mountain snow. Snow levels are at 8,000 feet on Friday evening, but by Saturday morning, they will crash to around 2,000 feet! This, and Convergence Zone snow bands, will bring significant snow to the passes.

The NAM forecast for snow through 11 PM Sunday is below.

Expect 10-24 inches at all the passes by the end of the weekend.

The HRRR forecast below agrees with the NAM. Below is the HRRR forecast for snow through 4 PM Sunday.

The HRRR also shows 10-24 inches at the passes through the weekend.

Be prepared for winter driving conditions at the passes all weekend. Stay tuned to WSDOT for more information. Stay tuned to Twitter and the blog for updates!
