A Couple Rainy Days Ahead

We haven’t had rain in nearly 2 weeks! That is about to change, as two frontal systems move into Western Washington on Thursday and Friday. By the weekend, sun and warmer (75-80°) temperatures will return.

The first frontal system and the associated rain is approaching the coast right now (9 PM Wednesday). This front will bring light rain to our area, with the highest chance for rain being Thursday morning.

We receive light amounts of rain from this system, with 0.05-0.15 inches of rain being the most likely outcome.

The second, stronger frontal system arrives on Friday, with precipitation chances increasing Thursday night. There is also a chance of thunderstorms on Friday, as this system brings some instability with it.

Here is the total precipitation from Wednesday night to Saturday morning (including rain from the Thursday system).

After both systems have passed, the area totals 0.4-0.5 inches. That means that the second (Friday) system brings 0.25-0.5 inches of rain. That’s a decent total for August.

This will be a welcome relief after a long stretch of heat and dry weather. Take a look at the South Sound August rain totals (8/1 to 8/19).

No station (except for near the mountains) has had more than 0.10 inches! (4.72 inches west of Graham is an obvious outlier, so it’s not credible). So, in short, it’s been a very dry month!

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms on Friday due to some instability brought in by the frontal system. I don’t expect anything major, but be prepared for some heavier showers Friday afternoon/evening. Friday might also be breezy, due to the pressure differences created by the frontal system. I’d expect gusts 15-25 mph.

After these two frontal systems, partly-mostly sunny and dry weather returns, with highs in the mid 70s to low 80s. Right now, it looks like this seasonable weather will remain through at least the first couple days of September.
